Capital City Alternative Math Teacher Wins Alyce Clark Award

May 1, 2024 - WAPT News awarded Jaamal Elkins of Capital City Alternative School with the Alyce Clark Award.

Elkins has taught Algebra 1 in 换妻社区 for four years. He's passionate about watching kids grow and reach their full potential.

The teacher was called to the principal's office only to be greeted with cameras and cheers, praising him for his dedication to scholars.

“I treat every student like I would if they were at a regular school. At the end of the day, they’re still kids. Just treat them with the proper respect and have class management,” Elkins said. “I want to redirect their path and let them know there is always someone who’s not willing to give up on you."

Elkins began his educational journey at University of West Alabama in 2013, and graduated magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a Minor in Special Education in 2018.  He also graduated in 2019 at the same institution with a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics. He will soon receive his Specialist in Educational Leadership in August at William Carey University.

He aspires to one day lead a school by becoming a principal. Teaching mathematics has changed over the changes, and Mr. Elkins wanted to show why kids need Algebra I in their daily lives.
